June 14, 2016
Baltimore City police are headed to Puerto Rico in an effort to recruit more Spanish-speaking officers. The Police Department hopes to hire some 200 new police officers this year. They actively recruit from the military and local and out-of-state colleges. And the next class of Baltimore police recruits could have dozens of cadets from Puerto Rico training to become officers in the city."We have a growing Hispanic population in south and southeast Baltimore, and we want to be able to have officers who can communicate effectively with a second language with Spanish," Baltimore police Maj. James Handley said.
